U.S. Air Force announced big changes to its fitness test. Beginning in 2026, all Airmen will take the test twice a year, and the 2-mile run will now be the main cardio event. These updates, shared on September 24, 2025, are designed to improve both fitness and long-term health. What’s New in the 2026 US Air Force Physical Fitness Standards?
The new USAF PFT requirements test puts more focus on overall fitness, not just running fast or doing lots of push-ups. The total score is still out of 100 points, but the way it’s split up has changed:
- 50 points for cardio – like the 2-mile run, HAMR shuttle run, or 2-km walk
- 20 points for body composition – measured by your waist-to-height ratio (WHtR)
- 15 points for upper body strength – push-ups or hand-release push-ups
- 15 points for core strength – sit-ups, planks, or cross-leg reverse crunches
You now need to take the PT test twice a year (every 6 months) instead of just once. This applies to active-duty Airmen, and the Reserves and Guard will follow similar schedules.
Also, the 2-mile run is now the main cardio event, replacing the old 1.5-mile run. But you can still choose alternate options, like the HAMR shuttle run or 2-km walk (with approval). If you have any exemptions or need to choose alternate exercises, your Unit Fitness Program Manager (UFPM) will guide you.
How the Scoring Works
To pass the USAF physical fitness standards, you must:
- Get at least 75 points total,
- Do not fail any part of the test. (Even if your total is 75+, you still fail if you don’t meet the minimum in any one area.)
The body composition part is done separately up to 5 days before your test date. It uses your waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) instead of the old “tape test.” A WHtR under 0.46 is considered low risk and gets you full points in that category.

Body Composition: Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) – 20 Points
The Waist-to-Height Ratio (WHtR) is how the Air Force now measures body composition. It’s calculated by dividing your waist size (in inches, measured at the navel) by your height in inches. This number helps assess your overall health risk, and it applies to all ages and genders.
WHtR is measured separately, up to 5 days before your PT test.

Why It Matters:
If your WHtR is in the low-risk range, you’ll earn the full 20 points for this part of the test.
For example, a male with a 34-inch waist and a 70-inch height has a WHtR of 0.49, which is considered healthy.

Upper Body Strength: Push-Ups or Hand-Release Push-Ups (HRPU) – 15 Points
For this part of the test, you can choose between regular push-ups (done in 1 minute) or hand-release push-ups (HRPU) (done in 2 minutes). The number of reps you need depends on your age and gender, based on official Air Force Academy PFT standards.

For the core endurance part of the PT test, you can choose sit-ups (done in 1 minute), cross-leg reverse crunches (done in 2 minutes), or a forearm plank (held for time in seconds). Cardiorespiratory Fitness: 2-Mile Run or HAMR – 50 Points
The updated Air Force PT test uses the 2-mile run as the main cardio event. You can also choose the HAMR shuttle run (20-meter sprints) or a 2-kilometer walk if you have a valid exemption. These options are all part of the official 2026 Air Force PFT standards by age.

The 2-mile run tests your endurance and is the core of the cardio requirement. If you’re better with short bursts of speed, the HAMR might be a smarter choice. For bases above 5,000 feet elevation, your run time is adjusted about 1 minute added per mile to account for thinner air.
